Douglas: Welcome to the Unleash Your Potential Blog, what question can I answer for you today?
EmpowerEvolution: How can I better manage my time and priorities?
Douglas: Thank you so much for asking. I find it very interesting that you bundled these two concepts together. I have found over the years, that where your priorities are is where you spend your time. Most of us seem to make time for the things that matter most to us.
The challenge then is that if we feel like our time management isn’t working, it is likely that our priorities aren’t in line. In my experience, managing our priorities leads to effective time management.
So, EmpowerEvolution, I suggest that it might be time for you to reevaluate your priorities.
Start by figuring out where you are. What about your current time management isn’t working for you? What are your current priorities? Remember that where your priorities are your time will follow. Conversely, where you spend your time speaks to your priorities.
So what are you spending your time on right now? Keep a journal for a week and look at everything you are spending time on. You have 24 hours or 1,440 minutes. What does your time ledger look like? Then look at all the things you wrote down, what priorities might they suggest? If you spend 240 minutes a day watching cat videos on TikTok, then you are placing a priority on watching TikTok. If this is not what you want to be a priority then make a change. Establish a new priority. I know that I doom scroll on Facebook for 20-30 minutes a couple of times a day. That’s 90 minutes I could prioritize elsewhere (perhaps writing these blogs…).
Once you establish the priorities you want, you will start to adjust your time naturally. If you decide getting more sleep is a priority, you will start to go to bed earlier. If you decide family is important, you will make more time to spend with them.
Readjusting priorities and time management is easy to explain, but much harder to do. However, the key is to start somewhere. Pick a little change you can make to feel successful. Then build on that success.
I hope my answer sheds some light on your question. If you want to dig into this concept further, I encourage you to reach out and set up a conversation. In the meantime, check back tomorrow for the next question in the Unleash Your Potential Series!
Be Well!
